Q. What are some surgical options for weight loss?
A. Some approved surgeries for weight loss include:
- Vertical band gastroplasty (VBG) - In this surgery, the stomach is stapled to divide it into 2 parts. The upper part is small and limits the space for food. The food empties from the upper part into the lower part through a small opening. A band is placed around the opening so that it does not stretch.
- Laparoscopic gastric banding (Lap-Band) - In this surgery, an inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch and narrow passageway into the remainder of the stomach. This limits the amount of food consumed and creates an earlier feeling of fullness. The band is intended for severely obese people. The band is intended to remain in place permanently, but it can be removed if necessary.
- Roux0en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) v- In this surgery, the stomach is made smaller by using staples to create a small stomach pouch. The pouch is then attached to the middle part of the small intestine. Because food bypasses the upper part of the small intestine, it limits the amount of food that can be consumed. This also reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs.
- Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) - This surgery is not commonly used in the United States. In this surgery, a large part of the stomach is completely removed from the body. This surgery is not commonly used because there is a high risk of nutritional deficiencies.
Q. Can I use liposuction to help me lose weight?
A. Liposuction is a surgical procedure to help shape the body, but it is not recommended for weight loss. Fat is removed from under the skin by a vacuum-suction canula or by an ultrasonic probe that breaks up fat into small pieces and removes it with suction. This surgery is great for people with localized fat deposits. It does not guarantee permanent weight loss. To avoid weight gain after liposuction, people need to follow a strict diet and exercise plan.
Q. Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
A. If you are very overweight and have tried losing weight through a healthy diet and exercise, but just cannot lose the pounds, then surgery may be an option for you. Weight loss surgeries are normally for men who are at least 100 lbs over weight and for women who are at least 80 lbs overweight. If you do not fall within these weight ranges, but suffer from diabetes or heart disease, you still may be eligible for a weight loss surgery/
