One surgical operation meant to reduce the weight in obese individuals is gastric band surgery. Obesity begins with a body mass index of 30. Most gastric band surgeries are suited for patients with a body mass index higher than 35. Gastric band surgery is performed best under general anesthesia and laparoscopically. Each gastric band surgery takes approximately one hour to complete.
Originally, traditional weight loss surgery usually consisted of separating the stomach by creating a smaller pouch with staples. In these procedures today, however, usually a hollow plastic band is inserted around the stomach. The plastic band connects to a small box. This small box is then implanted inside in the abdominal wall. When the box fills with physiologic serum, the band becomes constricted. When this happens, the individual is then required to lower the amount of food that they consume. Therefore reducing calorie intake and resulting in weight loss. With a needle, however, modulation can occur by filling or emptying the box.
For those with severe cases of obesity, generally a body mass index above 50, are best suited for gastro-jejunal bypass surgery. Although this surgical procedure was intended only for adults, there are some surgeons willing to perform this procedure on teenagers; even children as young as age 12. It is usually mandatory to have a psychiatric assessment and be highly motivated when it comes to adjusting eating habits in order to qualify for any type of gastric band surgery. Not only is gastric band surgery very popular in America, but it is also popular in Australia and throughout Europe. In fact, out of all of the different weight loss surgeries performed in Australia, over 90% of are gastric band surgery.
Like any type of surgery, there are risks of complication. The procedure can go wrong, the band may slip, infection can occur, and sometimes, even death may occur. Common side effects of gastric band surgery are vomiting and regaining the lost weight. However, keep in mind that these occurrences are very rare. Most gastric band surgeries turn out to be successful and offer many great benefits. ]
Other great benefits of gastric band surgery include:
- Faster recovery
- Shorter hospital stay
- The ability to get the band adjusted
