Pilates is pronounced, “puh-lah-teez”, and is a system of over 500 controlled exercises that engaged the condition the entire body and mind.  Pilates is a balanced blend of flexibility training and strength training that improves posture, reduces stress, and creates lean muscles without bulking up.  Pilates workouts are one of the most popular forms of exercise today.  It relies on gradual methodical placement and movement, and less on “going for the burn”.  A Pilates work out builds strength, mental focus, and balance.  An important part of Pilates is the warm-up.  Warming up is essential to a successful Pilates work out because you want to make sure your muscles are loose and allow flexibility to prevent cramping.

A Pilates work out can be tuff and you should take your time before advancing to harder Pilates workouts.  Pilates workouts should be done 3-4 times a week on non-consecutive days.  When doing a Pilates work out you should keep in mind to keep your body stabilized throughout the movement, don’t swing or use momentum, and make sure abs are pulled in tight throughout each movement.  After a Pilates session you feel invigorated instead of exhausted.

Pilates works out several muscle groups at the same time through smooth, continuous motion, with concentration on stabilizing and strengthening the core abdomen, back, and pelvic girdle region.  The focus in Pilates is on the quality of movement rather than quantity.  Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked or overlooked.

Some Pilates workouts use specialized Pilates equipment like the Pilates Reformer, Ladder Barrel, and the Pilates Cadillac.  Pilates have small accessories including balls, Pilates rings, and resistance bands that can be added to the Pilates repertoire for more variety.  Pilates can also be performed in your home using normal fitness equipment.

Pilates is usually practiced in a Pilates studio under careful supervision of a certified Pilates instructor or in one-on-one or small group session.  These professionals are highly trained Pilates specialists who know how to tailor a Pilates program to meet individual needs and abilities.

Pilates classes are offered in specialized studios and in gyms because of the popularity of the routine.
