Some designs fold down and let you store them under a bed while others fold up for easy storing in a closet. If you keep yours in a multipurpose room or converted gym room, you can simply fold the tread up leaving you the room you need to accomplish any other activity.
Treadmill workouts have always been recognized as one of the best full body workouts available. A treadmill workout focuses your exercise movement on the natural and time-tested motion that burns fat and tone muscles by encouraging metabolization and getting much needed nutrient-rich oxygenated blood to the muscles. A medium-intensity workout on a folding treadmill can consistently burn more calories than a comparable workout on a stationary bike because walking employs a larger active muscle mass therefore requiring more calories to accomplish similar results. Walking on a treadmill improves motor skills, balance, and coordination. This can be very helpful to people that suffer from certain health conditions that promote bone loss such as osteoporosis or older adults. A folding treadmill workout is ideal for people with chronic back or knee problems, pregnant women, certain circulatory conditions, and for people that have problems performing other types of more strenuous physical activities. Walking has been shown to boosts the immune system, improves circulation, and strengthens joints and soft tissue. Walking on a folding treadmill allows a person to takes advantage of this natural and low stress physical activity by allowing the user to control their stride at their own pace causing less stress on the back, hips, knees, ankles, and joints.
The U.S. government has found treadmills to be an efficient and effective workout for many including:
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is conducting a study of patients with partial spinal cord injury with the use of treadmill training. The focus of the study is on how this type of workout can help these patients recover motion and mobility skills after a paralyzing accident. The NICHD expects to prove that treadmills are better than regular physical therapy.
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with the University of Kentucky in Lexington and Vanderbilt University in Nashville conducted a study to determine the health effects of the weightlessness of space on astronauts. The study concluded that, astronauts experience decreased bone strength, loss of muscle mass, heart and blood vessel changes, and shifts in fluids within their bodies while in 0-gravity. The research determined that one way that astronauts could minimize the adverse effects of space travel is by regular treadmill workouts
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is promoting the health benefits of walking and is encouraging kids to walk to school. The campaign hopes to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle by encouraging Americans of all ages to walk more. The CDC is touting the benefits of walking as one of the best and lowest stress activities that helps promote full body health. The CDC is trying to increase awareness of the importance of walking and regular physical activity and to increase the level of daily physical activity for all Americans.
- The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association along with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports are promoting the health benefits of walking as well. The program is entitled “WalkingWorks” and is part of the “Blue program for a healthier America”. Its goal is to get Americans to implement healthier habits in their day-to-day lives that will make them feel and look better, increase their energy levels, and lift their spirits.
